The SKSE allows a modder to 'hook' into the game engine. The SKSE is required for certain mods which require tight integration with the Skyrim game engine. It does so without modifying the executable files on disk, so there are no permanent side effects. The Skyrim Script Extender, or SKSE for short, is a modder's resource that expands the scripting capabilities of Skyrim.
